What Are Annual Profections?

Annual profections are a timing technique from Hellenistic astrology, dating back over 2,000 years. The technique is beautifully simple: beginning at birth (the 1st house), the chart "profects" or moves forward one house per year of life. At age 1, you're in a 2nd house year. At age 12, you return to the 1st house. At age 24, you return again. The cycle repeats every 12 years.

The house that is activated in a given year becomes the focus of that year's experiences. More importantly, the planet that rules the sign on that house's cusp becomes the "Time Lord" or "Year Lord" for that year — and that planet's condition in your natal chart, as well as any transits to it, become especially significant.

Despite its simplicity, annual profections have proven remarkably accurate. Many astrologers who work with this technique report that clients consistently recognize the themes of their profected house in the events and experiences of that year.

Working with Your Year Lord

Once you know your profected house, find the sign on that house's cusp in your natal chart. The planet that rules that sign becomes your Year Lord — the planet that governs the themes and events of that year.

To work with your Year Lord effectively:

• ✦Assess its natal condition: Is your Year Lord well-placed or challenged in your birth chart? A well-placed Year Lord suggests a smoother year; a challenged one indicates more difficulty but also more growth.
• ✦Track transits to it: Any major transits to your Year Lord during that year will be especially significant. Jupiter transiting your Year Lord often brings opportunities; Saturn brings challenges and growth.
• ✦Note its house and sign: The house and sign of your Year Lord in your natal chart add additional themes to the year.
