What Are the Houses?
The birth chart is divided into 12 sections called houses. While the planets represent the *what* (what energies are at play) and the signs represent the *how* (how those energies express themselves), the houses represent the *where* — the specific areas of life in which those energies manifest.
Think of the houses as the stage set of your life. The planets are the actors, the signs are their costumes and personalities, and the houses are the rooms in which each scene takes place.
The houses are determined by your exact birth time and location, which is why two people born on the same day in different places — or at different times — can have very different life experiences despite sharing the same Sun sign.
The 12 Houses
1st House — The House of Self
The 1st house governs your identity, physical appearance, first impressions, and the way you approach new beginnings. The sign on the cusp of your 1st house is your Rising sign (Ascendant). Planets here are highly visible and color your entire personality.
2nd House — The House of Resources
The 2nd house governs money, possessions, values, and self-worth. It reveals your relationship with material security — how you earn, spend, and relate to what you own. More deeply, it reveals what you value and what you believe you deserve.
3rd House — The House of Communication
The 3rd house governs communication, learning, siblings, short trips, and the immediate environment. It reveals how your mind works, how you express yourself in everyday conversation, and your relationship with your siblings and neighborhood.
4th House — The House of Home
The 4th house governs home, family, roots, and the private self. It reveals your relationship with your family of origin, your sense of belonging, and the foundation from which your life is built. The IC (Imum Coeli) sits at the cusp of this house.
5th House — The House of Creativity
The 5th house governs creativity, romance, children, play, and self-expression. It reveals how you create, how you love, and how you play. It's the house of joy — the area of life where you come most fully alive.
6th House — The House of Health and Service
The 6th house governs daily routines, health, work, and service. It reveals your relationship with your body, your work habits, and your approach to being useful in the world. It's the house of craft — the daily practice that builds mastery over time.
7th House — The House of Partnership
The 7th house governs committed partnerships — romantic and business. The sign on the cusp of your 7th house (the Descendant) reveals what you seek in a partner and what qualities you're learning to integrate within yourself. Planets here are highly activated in relationships.
8th House — The House of Transformation
The 8th house governs shared resources, sexuality, death, rebirth, and deep psychological transformation. It reveals your relationship with power, intimacy, and the inevitable cycles of loss and renewal. This is the house of what cannot be avoided.
9th House — The House of Philosophy
The 9th house governs higher education, travel, philosophy, religion, and the search for meaning. It reveals your relationship with truth, your worldview, and the experiences that expand your understanding of life. The Sagittarius house.
10th House — The House of Career
The 10th house governs career, public reputation, and legacy. The sign on the cusp of your 10th house (the Midheaven or MC) reveals your vocational calling and the qualities you're meant to develop in your public life. This is the most visible point in your chart.
11th House — The House of Community
The 11th house governs friendships, community, social causes, and future visions. It reveals your relationship with groups, your social ideals, and the role you play in the collective. It's the house of belonging — and of the future you're helping to create.
12th House — The House of the Hidden
The 12th house governs the unconscious, hidden enemies, spiritual retreat, and what is concealed. It reveals your relationship with solitude, spirituality, and the parts of yourself you haven't yet brought into the light. This is the house of dissolution — and of transcendence.
Stelliums: When Multiple Planets Cluster
When three or more planets occupy the same house, it's called a stellium. A stellium in a particular house indicates that the themes of that house are a major focus of your life — for better or worse. If you have a stellium in the 7th house, relationships will be a central arena of your growth. In the 10th, career and public life will demand your attention.
Empty Houses
Many people worry when they see empty houses in their chart. An empty house is not a problem — it simply means that area of life doesn't require as much conscious attention. It will still be activated by transiting planets, and the sign on its cusp still provides important information.
The Angular Houses: The Most Powerful
The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are called the angular houses, and planets placed in them are considered especially powerful and prominent in the chart. If you have planets in these houses, their energy will be particularly visible and significant in your life.
Understanding the houses transforms your birth chart from a collection of symbols into a complete map of your life — showing you not just who you are, but where your story is meant to unfold.
