How to Read Astrology Symbols

Astrology uses a rich symbolic language that can seem overwhelming at first. Every planet, sign, house, and aspect has its own symbol (also called a glyph) that appears in birth charts and astrological diagrams. Learning these symbols is the first step to reading your own chart.

The most important symbols to learn first are the 10 planets (including the Sun and Moon) and the 12 zodiac signs. Once you can identify these, you can begin to understand what your birth chart is showing you about your personality, relationships, and life path.

Aspects — the angular relationships between planets — are shown as lines connecting planets in the center of a birth chart wheel. Different types of lines (solid, dashed, colored) indicate different aspects. Harmonious aspects (trines and sextiles) are often shown in blue or green, while challenging aspects (squares and oppositions) are shown in red.
