What Actually Happens?

Mercury doesn't actually move backward. What we observe is an optical illusion caused by the relative speeds of Earth and Mercury as they orbit the Sun. Because Mercury orbits faster than Earth, it periodically "laps" us — and from our vantage point on Earth, it appears to reverse direction.

In astrology, Mercury governs communication, technology, travel, contracts, and the mind. When it retrogrades, these areas of life become prone to delays, misunderstandings, and reversals. The shadow period — the two weeks before and after the retrograde — can feel equally disruptive.
